Technical Report of the Kakioka Magnetic Observatory, Supplement -Selected Translations, No. 1, March, 2003

Preface

Akio Yoshida
Director

More than ninety years have passed since the nation's first geomagnetic observations came into service at Kakioka in 1913. The Kakioka Magnetic Observatory has continuously offered high-precision, consistent observational data over these decades using its up-to-date observation instruments and technology such that it has been accredited as one of the world's leading observatories. With the advent of the 21st century, public interest in geomagnetic phenomena continues to soar from the perspective of monitoring the global environment. The Kakioka Magnetic Observatory must live up to the expectations placed on it to address such interest in the global context of observation services.

The Technical Report of the Kakioka Magnetic Observatory Supplement compiles English translations of the most requested articles of those published only in Japanese on the technological developments, observation, and researches and studies conducted at the Kakioka Magnetic Observatory with an aim to contribute to an international cooperation in the geomagnetic observation projects. Nothing would delight me more than to see you, the reader, make extensive use of the presentations in the Supplement to aid you in your pursuit of earth science and associated sectors of science, together with the Report of the Kakioka Magnetic Observatory.
